Instrument Rating (Restricted) - IR(R)

The IR(R) or IMC rating is a UK only rating that allows pilots to fly in cloud and weather that is not suitable for visual flying. It gives the pilot restricted permissions as compared to a full Instrument Rating but also requires less training.

Pre-Requisites

To apply for the rating after the completion of course the pilot must have:

  • PPL(A) License

  • 25 Hours total time after PPL (A) license issue, including 10 hours as PIC and 5 hours cross country.

Course Structure

Hours total training including 10 hours with sole reference to the instruments

written exam covering knowledge needed for the rating

Skills Test

On the completion of course you will complete a skills test involving various instrument flying skills

The IR(R) can only be used in the UK and allows its holders to fly Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in class D,E,F and G airspace.

It also allows pilots to carry out instrument approaches to published minima with additional factors added on for IR(R) holders
